Thousands of UltraViolet Members Join Call for NFL Commissioner to Resign over Domestic Violence Scandal
On Sunday, September 14th, UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, will fly a plane over NFL football games at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco with a banner reading: @UltraViolet: #GoodellMustGo. On Monday, September 15th, the UltraViolet banner will also be flown over Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis as the Colts play the Philadelphia Eagles.

The banners come as activists are outraged over NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s blatantly deceptive behavior in the handling of Ray Rice’s domestic violence conviction and subsequent penalties. More than 15,000 UltraViolet members have already signed on to a petition calling for Goodell’s resignation in light of new evidence that the Commissioner had graphic video evidence and a verbal confession concerning the Ray Rice assault, but failed to act appropriately.

“It is time for Roger Goodell to resign, and for the NFL to get serious about its commitment to ending violence against women within the league,” said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet. “In a country where a woman is battered every 9 seconds and 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetime, we simply cannot afford to have an NFL commissioner who doesn’t take this issue seriously–which is clear from new evidence that NFL officials had graphic evidence of the Ray Rice assault since April. It is also clear given the league’s failure to take action in the domestic violence cases of Carolina Panthers player Greg Hardy–found guilty of assault in a court of law in July–and San Francisco 49ers player Ray McDonald.”
** Due to security concerns, no air traffic is allowed over the stadiums up to one hour prior to the start of the game. Planes are scheduled to fly for two hours above each stadium prior to the no-fly restrictions.
