UltraViolet Applauds USPS for Honoring Maya Angelou with Stamp
More than 60K Called for Stamp’s Creation Over a 6-month Campaign
After a nearly 6-month campaign by women’s advocacy organization UltraViolet, the USPS today announced a new postage stamp to honor the legendary Maya Angelou, who passed away last Spring.
Statement from UltraViolet Co-founder Shaunna Thomas:
“We are thrilled to see the USPS honor the legendary Maya Angelou today. Maya Angelou’s influence on American culture and life cannot be overstated, and we are glad to see her legacy honored in this way.”
Maya Angelou was influential in many ways: she was Hollywood’s first black female director, a best-selling author of 36 books and presidential inauguration poet, among other accomplishments. That’s why tens of thousands of people urged the US Postal Service to take action in honoring her following her passing.
