LOOK UP: Plane Flies Over Downtown Louisville With Banner Reading “BREONNA WAS ESSENTIAL. DEFUND LMPD.”
LOUISVILLE, KY — On Saturday, June 13th, a plane will fly through downtown Louisville, from the West End to East End demanding justice for Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency room technician who was shot to death in her bed by the Louisville Metro Police Department. No charges have been brought against the officers responsible for Taylor’s death.
The banner, which was commissioned by UltraViolet and Color of Change in direct coordination with Black Lives Matter Louisville, celebrates Breonna’s life while simultaneously calling for defunding the Louisville Metro Police Department. Specifically, the banner will read:
“BREONNA WAS ESSENTIAL. DEFUND LMPD.”
WHEN: Saturday, June 13th from 11:00am to 1:00pm (ET)
WHERE: The plane will fly over the Louisville City Hall (601 W Jefferson St #19, Louisville, KY 40202) from 11:30am – 12:30pm ET.
“Breonna Taylor is dead because Louisville Metropolitan Police Department officers murdered her as she slept – it is unacceptable that her killers remain uncharged and employees of the LMPD,” said Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director of UltraViolet. “Breonna was an essential member of the Louisville community, an essential worker, and her life mattered. We stand in solidarity with her family, and friends and are working in conjunction with Black Lives Matter Louisville activists who are demanding justice for her death, to keep up the pressure on all responsible parties. The LMPD must be held accountable for these horrific and racist acts.”
“Almost three months have passed since Breonna Taylor was horrifically murdered in her home and her family has yet to see anything resembling justice. Instead we have seen more evidence of the police department’s lies, obfuscation and system abuses,” said Scott Roberts, Senior Director of Criminal Justice Campaigns at Color Of Change. “Every day her murderers go uncharged is another searing reminder that the criminal justice system is a deadly threat to Black people everywhere. Breonna’s murders and the LMPD must be held accountable today.”
Last week, the Louisville Courier Journal carried a paid advertisement commissioned by UltraViolet and Color of Change declaring that “Breonna was Essential.”

Nearly three months after Louisville Metro Police officers fatally shot Breonna Taylor in her South End apartment, the department has released the incident report from that night; it is almost entirely blank. The four-page report lists the time, date, case number, incident location and Taylor’s name — as well as the fact that she is a 26-year-old black female. Though she was shot at least eight times, the report lists Taylor’s injuries as “none.”
This week, the Louisville Metro Council voted unanimously to ban no-knock warrants. The legislation was titled Breonna’s Law, in honor of Breonna Taylor
