Women’s Group: Republicans and Congress Must Censure Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL)

WASHINGTON, DC– Yesterday, a reporter overheard Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) verbally accosting Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in the East wing of the Capitol. During the altercation, Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez she was “disgusting” and used expletives directed at her after the exchange was over.

Statement from Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s organization:

“Rep. Ted Yoho’s misogynistic verbal attacks against Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez were incompletely inappropriate and should be censured by both members of his party and the House of Representatives.

“It is expected that Members of Congress will disagree on important issues facing our country. But these comments, which come just days after a violent racist and misogynist murdered the son of a prominent woman Latina Judge in an attempt to assassinate her, prove that vulgar attacks against women, especially those serving elected office, are a real and present threat.

“Words matter. Yoho’s words weren’t just sexist — they were an attempt to normalize abuse against women who speak their minds. Congress and the Republican Party should censure Rep. Ted Yoho and make it explicitly clear that they will not accept this behavior in any form.”
