Women’s Group: After Comey Testimony, Congress Must Begin Impeachment Process

‘Anyone Who Saw The Access Hollywood Tape Should Not Be Surprised By Today’s Testimony’

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, as former FBI Director James Comey delivers his highly-anticipated testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee alleging that President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following statement calling on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings:

“James Comey’s testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee this morning proves what we have expected all along —that Donald Trump has abused his power as President and attempted to obstruct justice to end an investigation into his campaign. Trump’s actions prove that he is unfit to uphold his presidential oath to protect the Constitution—and now Congress needs to act by initiating the impeachment process.

“The reckless and criminal behavior outlined by James Comey today should not come as a surprise to anyone. We saw it last fall when the Access Hollywood tape came out and Trump made clear that he believes he is above the law. In those tapes, we heard Trump bragging about the way he sexually assaults women with impunity and uses his celebrity status to get away with it. Now as Commander-in-Chief, we see this same pattern of behavior in Trump yet again.

“No one is above the law. and Congress must act now to protect our democracy.”
