FRIDAY: In Protest to Republican Health Care Repeal Bill, Constituents to Hold Speak-Outs at Senate Offices Nationwide; Warn Republican Senators That the Legislation Will Cause a National Health Care Crisis
UltraViolet Members Speak-Out in Maine, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Arizona and Colorado Urging Republican Senators to Oppose the Repeal of the Affordable Care Act
Following the release of the Senate health care repeal bill this week, local members of UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy group, will hold in-state speak-outs at Senate offices in Maine, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Arizona and Colorado to push Sen. Collins (R-ME), Sen. Isakson (R-GA), Sen. Toomey (R-PA), Sen. Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Flake (R-AZ), and Sen. Gardner (R-CO) to oppose the Republican health care plan that would be the beginning of a national health care crisis – devastating the American health care landscape, eviscerating reproductive health care services for women, and kicking more than 23 million people off of their health insurance. The speak-outs will happen on Friday, June 23rd, at in-district Senate offices around the country.
On Thursday, June 22nd, the long-awaited text of the Senate health care repeal bill—legislation devised in secret by 13 male GOP members—was revealed. It will give massive tax breaks to the rich, strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood clinics and make even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill.

Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet, explained:
“We now know why Senate Republicans kept their health care repeal bill secretive for so long: The bill is crueler than we could have ever imagined, and will make healthcare worse for everyone. It raises costs, cuts coverage, weakens protections, and practically ends Medicaid as we know it.
“These devastating cuts would hit women—especially women of color—the hardest by eliminating guaranteed coverage for live-saving cervical and breast cancer screenings, abolishing comprehensive maternity care and domestic violence screenings, defunding Planned Parenthood, and making it harder for women to access birth control and emergency contraception.
“Repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with a secretive Republican plan—one devised behind closed doors and without the input of a single woman at the table—isn’t a solution, it’s an assault on our very lives and the makings of a severe national health care crisis.
“Women across the country oppose the Republicans’ extremist healthcare agenda—and we will not rest until it is defeated. We simply will not allow GOP Senators to betray us and our families.”
