TUES 12PM: Women’s Group Flies Plane Over MA State House Urging Support for Paid Leave, $15 Minimum Wage
“Both paid family and medical leave and a $15 minimum wage are key to leveling the playing field for women–especially women of color. Women make up two-thirds of the low-wage workforce, a disproportionate pool of which are Black, brown, and immigrant women,” explained Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet. “In states that increased the minimum wage, women’s wages grew faster and actually shrank the wage gap. Research has shown that access to paid family and medical leave saves women $274,044 in lifetime wages. By failing to implement these common sense policies, Massachusetts legislators are effectively blocking women of color from the opportunities that white men in the state have long enjoyed.”
“We’re proud to be part of the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition in winning people and families the dignity of working in fairer and more just workplaces throughout the Massachusetts,” added Thomas.
