Women’s Group: “Rep. Pete Sessions is a Domestic Violence Apologist”
Top House Republican Said Man Killed His Wife ‘Because the Woman Was Unfair’
Earlier today, Talking Points Memo released a video of Rep. Pete Sessions making outrageous remarks in an event in his home district when advocating for a change in the Dallas family court system’s ‘no-fault’ divorce policy. In his remarks, he expressed sympathy for a man who shot and murdered his wife in his district after family court proceedings, “because the judge was unfair, and the woman was unfair.” He went on to say that the wife “demanded something, and he was out. And it was frustration.”
In reaction to Rep. Sessions’ comments, Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group, explained:
“Yet again, another prominent Republican member of Congress has made headlines for exposing his dangerously sexist world view. This time, Congressman Pete Sessions did so by suggesting a man who shot and murdered his wife after divorce proceedings did not go his way was actually a victim in the situation.
“Domestic violence-related murder is an epidemic of massive proportions in this country—in fact, more than half of homicides against women are committed by intimate partners. Women are being killed everyday in this country, and yet Congressman Sessions expresses sympathy for perpetrators of this heinous crime. Sessions is a domestic violence apologist, and his misogynist ideology disqualifies him from public office and serving his constituents.”
