UltraViolet Slams Louis C.K. Following Reports of His Re-emergence into the Comedy World
The New York Times reported today that on Sunday night, Louis C.K. made an unannounced appearance at New York City’s Comedy Cellar, performing for the first time since November 2017, when he admitted to sexual misconduct with five women in the comedy world.
Karin Roland, Chief Campaigns Officer at UltraViolet, issued the following statement in response:
“Louis C.K should cancel his comeback. Sexual predators and their enablers are not the ones who get to decide when abusers should re-enter their industries. Louis C.K.’s reliance on mostly male comedy club owners to decide that he should quickly re-emerge into stand-up, rather than on the sentiments of the very women he abused, is absolutely wrong. Louis C.K. must first and foremost put in the time and effort to be rehabilitated, make amends, and ensure he is not perpetuating harm to others.”
Last month, UltraViolet published an essay on Medium about fundamentally prioritizing and centering the needs of survivors of sexual harassment and assault to heal, including preventing any further harm from their abuser or from re-traumatization,before their perpetrators can re-enter into the workplace in the era of #MeToo.
