STATEMENT: UltraViolet Reacts to Hillary Clinton’s CBS Interview on Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky

In a CBS interview that aired last Sunday, Hillary Clinton was asked if she thought her husband should have resigned after his affair with Monica Lewinsky, then a White House intern, became public.

“Absolutely not,” Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton also said the relationship wasn’t an abuse of power on the former president’s part. Lewinsky was “an adult,” she explained, before continuing the interview to discuss sexual harassment and assault allegations against President Donald Trump.

In response, Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director and Co-founder of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group, issued the following statement:

“It is deeply troubling for Hillary Clinton—a self-stylized supporter of the #MeToo movement—to characterize a relationship between one of the world’s most powerful men and a 22-year-old intern in a workplace setting as a clear cut case of consent. From Paula Jones to Juanita Broaddrick, Bill Clinton’s pattern of predatory behavior to sexually harass and assault women is well-documented, and we must stop erasing those women’s stories from the discussion.”
