UltraViolet Responds to Congress Passing Overhaul of Sexual Harassment Policies: ‘Better Late Than Never’
Earlier this week, Congress approved an overhaul of its process for handling sexual harassment and assault and other types of workplace discrimination.
The bill amends Congress’ rules to hold elected officials financially liable for settlements resulting from harassment and retaliation claims, eliminates mandatory counseling and mediation for survivors, and gets rid of a “cooling off” period that requires survivors to wait 30 days before filing a lawsuit or requesting an administrative hearing.
The legislation will now head to President Trump’s desk.
Shaunna Thomas, Co-founder of leading national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following in response:
“It’s long past time that Congress amended its antiquated procedures for addressing claims of sexual harassment, assault, and workplace discrimination. This legislation is a good first step, and UltraViolet applauds Congress for passing this important legislation before the end of the year.
“A no-tolerance policy for sexual harassment in the workplace is not a partisan issue, and survivors and all women can breathe a sigh of relief today knowing that Congress unanimously agrees that Hill staffers should be supported in coming forward and reporting allegations of harassment and assault. Not to mention—the American people can rest assured that their tax money will no longer go to closed-door settlements of sexual misconduct allegations.
“While this legislation is not perfect, it’s a strong step in the right direction and paves the way for the new Congress to build upon these rules with legislation that strengthens protections for all survivors of workplace sexual harassment nationwide.
“We implore Trump to pass this bill into law immediately.”
