UltraViolet, a leading national women-led gender-justice organization fighting for tech justice and a more feminist internet by holding the world’s largest technology companies accountable for the harms their products and platforms create, released the following statement in response to Meta’s $17 billion multi-state settlement over teen social media addiction:
“Meta is being forced to pay out $17 billion because of the voices of parents—most of all, grieving mothers. Their power forced attorneys general to compel Meta to act using the only language Zuckerberg and Mosseri speak: dollars,” said Jenna Sherman, campaign director at UltraViolet. “This case is yet another indicator that the tides are turning against Big Tech, which is having the Big Tobacco moment advocates have been organizing for over decades.
Women, children, and LGBTQ+ people are not Silicon Valley’s guinea pigs—and we refuse to continue to let tech companies like Meta treat them that way,” Sherman added. “Children’s safety, dignity, and lives are worth more than corporate profits.”
