19,000 Join Women’s Group in Demanding that the Miami-Dade Police Department Fire Officer Alejandro Giraldo for Assaulting Dyma Loving
Loving Called Police After Her Neighbor Threatened Her with a Gun; Officer Giraldo Responded by Assaulting Her
MIAMI, FLORIDA — A new petition from UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group, is calling on the Miami-Dade police department to fire officer Alejandro Giraldo for assaulting Dyma Loving, a mother of three, who called police to report a neighbor threatening her with a gun. The petition, which launched earlier this week has since been signed by more than 19,000 people.

“Dyma Loving needed protection when she called the police because of a man threatening her with a gun, but instead of getting it, when Miami-Dade police officer Alejandro Giraldo showed up, he escalated the situation, dragged her to the ground, and told her she should be sent to a mental hospital. This type of violence against Black women happens all too often, and can be deadly, as in the cases of Rekia Boyd and Sandra Bland. We can’t allow it to be swept under the rug,” explained Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet. “The Miami-Dade Police Department suspended Officer Giraldo–but that’s not nearly enough. Giraldo is a danger to the public, and can’t be trusted to serve or protect.”
UltraViolet’s petition echoes the call from Loving’s lawyer, Justin A. Moore, Esq who is demanding that Officer Giraldo be fired. Loving is also pursuing charges against Giraldo and the neighbor, Frank Tumm.
