BREAKING: State’s Attorney to File Charges Against Officers in Attack of Dyma Loving
Women’s Group Praises State Attorney’s Decision, Calls on Miami-Dade Police Department to Fire Officer Giraldo
MIAMI, FLORIDA — Moments ago, State’s Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, announced that her office would move forward with criminal charges against the Officer Alejandro Giraldo in the attack of Dyma Loving. On March 5, Dyma Loving called the police for help because a neighbor pointed a gun at her and threatened her life, but police responded by threatening her, shoving her to the ground, unlawfully arresting her and holding her for 15 hours in jail.
In reaction to the announcement, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive direct of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s organization, issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision by the State’s Attorney to press charges against Officer Giraldo for attacking Dyma Loving was the right decision and an important step to make sure that police violence against Black women is not swept under the rug.
“When Dyma Loving called the police, she needed protection – but what she got was violence and abuse. That’s unacceptable, but unfortunately, this type of violence against Black women happens all too often, and can be deadly, as in the cases of Rekia Boyd and Sandra Bland.
“It is clear that Officer Alejandro Giraldo is a danger to the public and cannot be trusted to serve or protect. The Miami-Dade Police Department should fire Officer Giraldo immediately.”
More than 28,000 people have signed onto a petition from UltraViolet calling on the Miami Dade Police Department to fire Officer Alejandro Giraldo. In April, members of UltraViolet, joined by local activists and advocates from Color of Change held a press conference outside the State’s Attorney office demanding justice for Dyma Loving.
