New York City, NY–UltraViolet Education Fund, a national women-led gender-justice organization responsible for numerous impactful victories against sexual predators like Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, and Bill O’Reilly, announced today a new campaign in support of survivors of sexual violence called “Flowers for Survivors.” The campaign comes amid the high-profile Sean “Diddy” Combs sex trafficking and racketeering trial, and as survivors make clear that they will not go back on progress and justice. The organizers are launching the effort in support of all survivors of sexual violence, who are likely reliving their own experiences as they watch the trial.

“With the entire country closely watching Diddy on trial for sex trafficking and racketeering, we know that the commentary and this moment can weigh heavily on the minds and hearts of survivors of sexual assault, who are likely reliving their own experiences and being retraumatized by the media discourse,” said Arisha Hatch, interim executive director at Ultraviolet. “With ‘Flowers for Survivors,’ we’re reaching out to survivors everywhere to tell them, ‘We see you, we believe you, and we stand firmly alongside you.'”

UltraViolet’s Flowers for Survivors campaign consists of the following:

  • A 10-second video ad on a billboard in Times Square. UltraViolet is running a 10-second video ad with a message to survivors. Starting on Tuesday, June 3, it will show six times per hour at 1500 Broadway, about five stories up on the corner building. The message reads: “For all you survived; the pain you endured; healing and rebuilding your life; for sharing your story knowing people might not believe you, we celebrate you.” The ad points to flowersforsurvivors.org, a campaign landing page described below.
  • More than 1,300 digital “love notes” to Cassie Ventura from UltraVviolet members across the country. UltraViolet collected more than 1,300 love notes written by members in support of recording artist Cassie Ventura, who testified in the Diddy trial a week before she gave birth.
  • Advocating for policy change. UltraViolet was a critical partner in helping pass AB 933 in California, the only state law in the country to protect survivors’ right to share their truth without the fear of retaliatory defamation lawsuits. Recently, UltraViolet members wrote to urge their state legislators to pass a similar law in New York.
  • Landing page: flowersforsurvivors.org. This page serves as a digital hub, anchoring the message to survivors and encouraging everyday people to join UltraViolet in making the dream of ending gender-based violence a reality.

The campaign arrives at a critical time, amid backlash against the progress made by survivors and their allies to create a world where all survivors are freed from shame and stigma, and where sexual predators are brought to account. Now more than ever, UltraViolet is calling on allies and supporters to flood survivors with messages of support and reaffirm our commitment to backing them in this hostile political and cultural environment.
