Retribution Against Rep. LaMonica McIver Makes Clear That Administration Seeks Blank Check to Trample Communities

Today, leaders from the women’s organizations UltraViolet, Higher Heights, Supermajority, the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, All* In Action Fund, Women’s March and Reproductive Freedom for All released the following joint statement in reaction to developments in the Trump administration’s persecution of Representative LaMonica McIver (NJ-10). In response to Rep. McIver exercising her oversight obligations in her district regarding the administration’s brazen, sweeping targeting of immigrants, the Trump administration filed charges against her, resulting in an indictment this week.

“As we have said from the outset, the persecution of Congresswoman LaMonica McIver is part of the Trump administration’s broader targeting of Black women. The charges against her, and the inhumane and lawless kidnapping of immigrants that the congresswoman denounced, tell the story of an administration attempting to bypass checks and balances while terrorizing community members and the elected officials who represent them.

“Going after political rivals with politicized cases in court is the stuff of authoritarians. And as is the case with those figures, it shows Donald Trump’s fragility. He appears unable to handle having his decisions questioned, particularly by women.

“The fact remains that taking people from the streets–ripping our neighbors from their homes, frightening children with agents in schools, removing our neighbors from the communities where they belong–is immoral, excessive, and harmful to all of us. While Trump and his allies are clearly doing this to distract from their disastrous policies and point the finger at someone else, we see right through them. We applaud leaders like McIver, who do the right thing and take action despite facing persecution from this administration.”
