BREAKING: AT&T Exposed for Breaking Pledge to Halt Political Donations for Republicans Who Voted to Overturn 2020 Presidential Election Results
UltraViolet slams AT&T for “PR stunt,” after reports show company immediately broke its pledge of halting all contributions to 147 Republicans who tried to overturn 2020 election
According to reports released earlier today, AT&T violated its own pledge of halting all financial contributions to the 147 Republicans in Congress who tried to overturn results of the 2020 presidential election.
Last year, five days after the January 6th attack at the United States Capitol, AT&T publicly announced the company would suspend contributions to “members of Congress who voted to object to the certification of Electoral College votes…”
Almost immediately, AT&T created loopholes that helped the company fund the exact same Republican members Congress who tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
In response, Sonja Spoo, director of Reproductive Rights campaigns at UltraViolet, a national gender justice advocacy organization, issued the following statement:
“AT&T deliberately lied about halting political donations to the 147 Republican members of Congress who tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election. AT&T thought they could pull a fast one on consumers by making a pledge they had no intention of keeping. But consumers are wising up to corporate PR shenanigans.
“AT&T’s political donations have already helped elect some of the most extremist, right-wing Republican leaders who are hellbent on chipping away at our civil rights state by state.
“Over the past several months, we’ve seen Texas, Mississippi, and Florida implement unconstitutional abortion bans, hateful, discriminatory legislation that will traumatize transgender children and punish their parents and other LGBTQ+ students and racist voter suppression laws. It is clear that AT&T is choosing to side with hate and injustice over the rights of workers and consumers and even over our democracy AT&T’s continued support of extremist politicians is dangerous and cowardly, and history doesn’t look kindly on cowards.
“UltraViolet plans to hold AT&T accountable for these transgressions to the utmost extent.”
Last year, UltraViolet amplified how corporate political giving from companies like AT&T facilitated right-wing leadership in states with draconian anti-abortion laws, including Mississippi and Texas. As a result, the passage of laws such as Mississippi’s 15 week abortion ban and SB8 in Texas are now reality.
UltraViolet also released additional data extrapolating on corporate donations of $544,800.00 given throughout 2021 to Mississippi politicians who voted in favor of HB1510. Of those companies, AT&T was the largest single corporate donor in the state at $117,100.
