BREAKING: In response to growing behind the scenes pressure, DNC to Require Female Moderators at All 2020 Presidential Debates
UltraViolet Action Praises Decision and is proud to have helped usher in this change
WASHINGTON, DC — Moments ago, the Democratic National Committee announced that it will require female moderators at every 2020 presidential debate.
Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet Action, a leading national women’s group that organized candidates and media outlets to commit to ensure women and people of color were moderating every DNC-sanctioned debate, issued the following statement:
“For weeks, UltraViolet Action and our allies have pressured major news networks and the Democratic National Committee to ensure that every debate includes at least one woman moderator. We are proud to have helped usher in this change. Women, and especially Black women, are the bedrock of the Democratic party. At a time when women are organizing and voting in record numbers we should be shaping the debate. The DNC would do well to acknowledge the role that women played to make this possible. “
Shortly after informing the DNC about UltraViolet Action’s #AskForWomen Pledge, which had secured the support of a number of prominent 2020 Democratic Presidential candidates, the DNC moved forward to announce its decision to require female moderators at every Presidential debate.

Two weeks ago, UltraViolet Action sent a letter to media organizations covering the 2020 presidential primaries imploring them to practice unbiased reporting of every presidential hopeful, including calling for women moderators at every town hall and debate.
The letter was signed by a wide range of progressive advocacy organizations and women’s rights groups including: All* Above All Action Fund, Color of Change, CREDO, EMILY’s List, Feminist Majority Foundation, Girls for Gender Equity, Global Justice Center, MoveOn Political Action, NARAL, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Partnership for Women & Families, National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, National Women’s Health Network, NextGen America, Not Without Black Women, Pansuit Nation, Positive Women’s Network-USA, She The People, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, United We Dream Action, Way to Win, and Women’s March.
