Women’s Group Supports Survivors, Including Their Decision to Make a Deal, But Says There Are Systemic Flaws in How Judicial System Addresses Sexual Abuse Claims
WASHINGTON, DC — Moments ago, The New York Times reported that Harvey Weinstein and survivors who have accused him of sexual abuse have reached a tentative $25 million deal that would not require Weinstein to admit wrongdoing or pay anything to his accusers himself.
In reaction to the announcement, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group that called for Weinstein to be fired and held accountable for his abuse, issued the following statement:
“We support survivors – and that includes supporting survivors to make their own decisions to make deals with their abusers. But it’s hardly lost on us that these brave women made the only choice that was available to them under our flawed and disempowering judicial system. Survivors of sexual abuse deserve better.”
