FRIDAY 1:30PM: Women, Parents Deliver Jumbo Baby Bottles, “Let My Momma Vote” Onesie to Capitol Hill Offices Urging Senate to Modernize ‘Outdated’ Voting Rules

After Senator Duckworth’s History-Making Birth of Her Daughter This Week, UltraViolet & MomsRising Members to Visit Key Members of the Senate Rules Committee, Urging Changes to ‘Outdated’ Vote Rules

Washington, D.C. — On Friday, April 13th, members of UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, in collaboration with members of MomsRising, will deliver jumbo baby bottles, a baby onesie that will read “Let My Momma Vote,” and a petition with over 80,000 signatures to key members of the Senate Rules Committee urging they amend ‘outdated’ Senate rules that would bar new parents from the Senate floor. The action comes after Senator Duckworth gave birth to her child this week—making her the first U.S. Senator in history to give birth while in office.

WHAT: Delivery of petition signatures, baby bottles and onesie to the Senate, urging the Rules Committee modernize the rules and let new moms vote
WHEN: Friday, April 13th, 1:30 PM ET
WHERE: Hart Senate Office Building (the group will make their first stop at Duckworth’s office at 1:30 pm)

Despite her barrier-breaking pregnancy, Senate rules currently bar children from the floor and require that all Senators be physically present to cast a vote. Duckworth is currently leading the effort to change these rules.

“As Senator Duckworth welcomed baby Maile Pearl Bowlsbey into the world, she made history as the first woman to give birth while serving in the US Senate. This is an important milestone for women and mothers everywhere—and we’re proud to celebrate her for both breaking this barrier and for fighting to change Senate rules to be more welcoming of new parents,” explained Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet. “We urge Senator Duckworth’s colleagues in the Senate Rules Committee to take immediate action to change the outdated rules and allow her to both do the job she was elected to do and take care of her new child.”
