Gender Justice Group Checks Facebook For Censoring Rep. Newman’s Transgender Flag While Promoting Rep. Greene’s Transphobic Video
UltraViolet Reiterates Call for Facebook to Deplatform Majorie Taylor Greene
WASHINGTON, DC — This morning, Rep. Marie Newman shared that Facebook took down a video of her putting up a Transgender pride flag outside of her office, labeling the video as hate speech, while continuing to promote Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene’s transphobic video on the platform. Facebook did eventually restore Rep. Newman’s video, saying it was “removed in error” but has taken no action on Greene’s video.
Bridget Todd, communications director at UltraViolet, a leading gender-justice advocacy organization, explained:
“Earlier this year, Facebook finally took action and suspended Donald Trump’s account after years of allowing him to use its platform to spread lies, propaganda and foment violence. That was the right decision, but too little too late to stop the insurrectionist attack on the US Capitol.
“Today we are once again asking Facebook to hold Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene to the same standard by taking action now before it’s too late. Rep. Greene’s transphobic video attacking a colleagues Transgender child provokes violence against transgender people and its a clear violation of Facebook’s community standards.”
“This isn’t the first time Greene has used Facebook to promote hate or violence either.”
“When Majorie Taylor Greene said that she supported executing Democrats – she did so on Facebook. If Facebook were remotely interested in enforcing its community standards – they would have banned her from the platform a long time ago.
“Facebook’s failure to take action against Greene is rooted in its prioritization of clicks and profits over protecting people’s lives. With skyrocketing rates of violence against those in the Transgender community, and 2021 on track to be the deadliest year for Transgender people in the United States – Facebook’s continued refusal to act against transphobia is not just unacceptable, its dangerous.”
