New Letter Urges Senate Committee Inquiry on FTC Nominees’ Relationship With Disgraced Former Member Joshua Wright, Following Bombshell Sexual Misconduct Scandal
Ahead of Wednesday’s Senate Committee Hearing, Women’s Group Asks Senator Maria Cantwell, Ted Cruz Ask Nominees Melissa Holyoak, Andrew Ferguson About Relationship to Joshua Wright
WASHINGTON, DC — A new letter sent to Sen. Maria Cantwell and Sen. Ted Cruz today by UltraViolet, a leading national gender justice group, urges the Senate to investigate Federal Trade Commission (FTC) nominees for possible ties to Joshua D. Wright, a former FTC member and highly influential figure in antitrust law, who is currently facing well-documented allegations of sexual misconduct by multiple women.
In the letter, UltraViolet encourages Cantwell and Cruz, Chairs of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, to question FTC nominees, Melissa A. Holyoak and Andrew D. Ferguson, for their professional connections to Wright. Specifically, whether Wright played a role in securing their nominations, and what, if anything, they knew about the allegations and investigation into Wright. Although Wright’s tenure on the FTC expired in 2015, his influence in the antitrust law community is well-established. As UltraViolet’s letter explains:
“… it is critical that the committee thoroughly examines the character and professional histories of commission nominees. Following recent disturbing allegations against former FTC member Joshua D. Wright, we urge the committee to look into any past professional relationships between Wright and Melissa A. Holyoak and Andrew D. Ferguson. Specifically, we urge the committee to inquire about what role, if any, Wright played in helping advance their respective nominations.”
“…’Wright held outsized influence in the antitrust circles,’ with the ‘allegations also portray[ing] a cozy network between prominent law firms, well-connected insiders and the FTC.’…”
VIEW THE FULL LETTER HERE: https://weareultraviolet.org/ahead-of-senate-committee-hearing-ultraviolet-asks-senators-maria-cantwell-and-ted-cruz-to-ask-nominees-about-relationship-to-joshua-wright/
“With the information we now know about Joshua Wright, including accounts from eight women describing his propositioning of female students, staffers and job applicants at George Mason University, it’s absolutely crucial that we investigate the judgment of those who knew him well,” said Shaunna Thomas, executive director of UltraViolet. “We urge the Senate to thoroughly question Melissa Holyoak and Andrew Ferguson about their relationships with Wright as part of the FTC confirmation process. If they knowingly associated with an abuser who exploited his own power to coerce and manipulate women, that would represent a significant lapse in moral judgment. Those who demonstrate such a lapse do not belong in positions of power within our government.”

UltraViolet Demands NBA Put Kevin Porter Jr. on Leave After Assault Against Girlfriend, Former WNBA Player Kysre Gondrezick

UltraViolet Demands NBA Put Kevin Porter Jr. on Leave After Assault Against Girlfriend, Former WNBA Player Kysre Gondrezick
Leading gender justice advocacy group urges NBA to put Kevin Porter Jr. on leave, demands Houston Rockets take disciplinary action against Porter for domestic abuse
NEW YORK, NY — On Monday, Kevin Porter Jr. of the NBA’s Houston Rockets was arrested and arraigned by prosecutors in Manhattan for assaulting his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick.
Gondrezick told police that Porter punched her repeatedly in the face with a closed fist, cutting her above the right eye and causing bruising and substantial pain to her face. Gondrezick sustained a fractured vertebra in her neck.
In response to the news, Nicole Regalado, Vice President of Campaigns at UltraViolet, a national gender justice advocacy organization, issued the following statement:
“We are deeply disturbed by Kevin Porter Jr.’s actions and extend our unequivocal solidarity and support to Kysre Gondrezick as a survivor of domestic abuse.
“Moreover, we urge the NBA to take a dignified stance against domestic violence by placing Kevin Porter Jr. on administrative leave immediately as the league conducts its own internal investigation into Porter’s conduct. With Porter’s distressing record of domestic violence, we also urge the Houston Rockets to take tangible disciplinary action against him as well.
“For too long, the NBA has responded to incidents of domestic violence committed by players with meager slaps on the wrist. This sends an awful message — not just to players, but to NBA fans and survivors of domestic abuse everywhere.
“It’s time for the NBA and commissioner Adam Silver to take action against domestic violence by holding players like Kevin Porter Jr. accountable.”
UltraViolet has a long history of holding sports leagues and their leaders, including the NFL, accountable for their complacency toward players who commit domestic violence.
In 2015, the group launched the #GoodellMustGo campaign, demanding Commissioner Roger Goodell’s termination after his failure to adequately address domestic violence in the NFL and tolerance for sexual harassment against women employees.
In 2020, UltraViolet insisted that the NFL compel Dan Snyder to sell the Commanders after an investigation revealed his role in enabling, encouraging and fostering a hostile workplace and toxic culture for women. Last month, the demand was met after NFL owners voted unanimously for the team’s sale from the Snyder family.

BREAKING: UltraViolet Responds to 5th Circuit Court of Appeals Decision Restricting Mifepristone Access
National Gender Justice Group Says Decision Highlights Broken Court System, Calls on Health Insurance Companies to Expand Abortion Coverage
NEW ORLEANS, LA — Moments ago, the Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit held that the FDA’s actions unlawful after the agency allowed the drug mifepristone, an effective abortion and miscarriage care medication, to be taken after 6 weeks of pregnancy, mailed directly to patients, and prescribed by a medical professional other than a doctor.
The 5th Circuit’s decision will have no immediate impact on the availability of mifepristone and faces likely appeal to the Supreme Court.
In response to the decision, Nicole Regalado, VP of Campaigns, a leading gender justice advocacy organization, issued the following statement:
“If the Supreme Court refuses to take this case or affirms the 5th Circuit’s decision, it will severely restrict access to mifepristone nationwide. Today’s decision is a likely first step toward a massive blow to reproductive rights in the United States – and a stark reminder that our courts have been hijacked by Republican extremists who will stop at nothing to advance their sexist agenda.
“Mifepristone is a safe, legal FDA-approved medication. The 5th Circuit’s politically motivated decision to curtail access to this life-saving drug, despite its availability for the past twenty-three years, is detrimental to us all.
“In times like these, every single one of us must make a choice: Will we stand by and let extremist judges impose their sexist agendas on millions of people, or step up to protect the rights of women and pregnant people to make decisions about their bodies? History will remember which side we choose.
“UltraViolet and our 1 million members call on health insurance companies to expand abortion coverage for as many people and in as many states as possible, and the Biden Administration to ignore any court ruling that undermines the FDA’s authority and goes against science to restrict access to mifepristone.
“Today’s decision should sound the alarm for anyone who supports access to reproductive healthcare. Mifepristone saves lives. Your support is needed now more than ever.”
In anticipation of the ruling last month, UltraViolet called on:
-
The Biden Administration to ignore any court ruling that undermines the authority of the FDA — a single judge should not have the power to halt a federal agency’s authority, especially not over a safe medication available for more than twenty years;
-
All insurance providers to cover abortion care, even in the face of a potential mifepristone ban, and speak out against the ruling.
Earlier this year, UltraViolet commissioned a mobile billboard in Phoenix, AZ at the American Pharmacists Association Conference, urging pharmacists to continue advocating for the protection of access to mifepristone.

New Letter: 30+ Groups Renew Calls for New Mexico State Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto To ‘Step Down’ After Mounting Abuse Allegations
30+ national & local orgs including UltraViolet, me too. International, & Women’s March urge support for Daniel Ivey-Soto’s removal from New Mexico State Senate in solidarity with local survivors
NEW MEXICO – A new letter sent today by 30+ gender equity and survivor justice advocacy organizations is renewing calls for Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto’s resignation from the New Mexico State Senate. The letter, directed to all of Ivey-Soto’s affiliations in the non-profit and private sector, comes as mounting allegations of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment have surfaced from at least nine women.
Signed by leading national women’s rights groups, such as UltraViolet, me too. International, the National Women’s Law Center, and Women’s March, and 13 New Mexico-based organizations, including NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, OLÉ (Organizers in the Land of Enchantment), and Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico, the letter states:
“As Ivey-Soto has been credibly found to break basic rules of workplace conduct, he should not be in any position of power. To avoid any conflicts of interest and humiliating situations for women and survivors of sexual violence, we call upon your organization to sever ties and take any other appropriate action within your power to support the many women and survivors, including removing Ivey-Soto from panels, boards, committees; ending contracts with him; and finally, to call on him to resign from the State Senate.”
VIEW THE FULL LETTER HERE: https://weareultraviolet.org/
The joint letter also urges the New Mexico Legislature to adopt the Fair Process Principles, a set of guidelines created by New York AG Leticia James and survivor justice groups to reduce sexual violence in politics and properly investigate claims against elected officials and candidates.
Ivey-Soto resigned as chairman of the Senate Rules committee in 2022 after leaked results of an investigation showed probable cause that he violated their anti-harassment policy. However, formal action has not been taken by the body of the Senate and Ivey-Soto remains in office.
READ THE COMPLETE FAIR PROCESS PRINCIPLES HERE: https://survivorsagenda.org/
“State legislative offices are work environments that can be rife with harassment and abuse. Ivey-Soto is no exception. Because many of these workplaces lack human resources departments, survivors have limited resources for support mechanisms in which they can hold perpetrators accountable. This results in grave power imbalances that often lead to sexual violence,” said Elisa Batista, Campaign Director at UltraViolet. “The survivors brave enough to speak out here did so at risk to their reputations and careers. We stand with these nine women, who courageously came forward to share their stories, and the many more who are too afraid to come forward. We are grateful to the dozens of witnesses that spoke on the record in last year’s investigation. We hope our letter informs the New Mexico Legislature that they are not off the hook, and that we will continue to demand Ivey-Soto resign until he is no longer in office.”
“Nine women came forward to tell our stories about the sexual harassment, assault and abuse that Ivey-Soto inflicted upon us. After I submitted my complaint, the independent investigator found probable cause, constituents and local organizations called for his resignation and yet, he is still in office. More distressing, I was informed he sexually harassed another woman this session,” said consultant and legislative advocate, Marianna Anaya. “As women who spoke out, we put our reputations and livelihoods on the line, hoping to make our Roundhouse safer for the next generation. It feels affirming that people outside of New Mexico–national organizations that lead in holding perpetrators accountable–can see what we see: Ivey-Soto should never be trusted with a position of power, especially not an elected office.”
“Survivor autonomy is vital in every facet of political accountability, as is safety and access to trauma-informed care. Whether we show up as a constituency, or come forward as a result of experiencing harm in political spaces, survivors deserve to be heard, believed, and to have their needs be centered. The survivor justice movement will continue demanding accountability from perpetrators of sexual violence, as well as the systems that allow for the proliferation of sexual violence,” said Dani Ayers, CEO of me too. International.

UltraViolet Responds to NFL’s Ousting of Dan Snyder as Owner of Washington Commanders
Yesterday, the NFL released findings from an investigation exposing former Washington Commanders owner, Dan Snyder, for withholding revenue and sexually harassing a former employee. The release of the investigation came after NFL team owners moved to cut ties with Snyder, unanimously approving the sale of the Washington Commanders to Josh Harris for $6.05 billion.
In response, Arisha Hatch, Interim Co-Executive Director at UltraViolet, a leading national gender equality organization that called on the NFL to force Snyder’s sale the Commanders in 2020, issued the following statement:
“The Washington Commanders team, employees, and fans are all better off without Dan Snyder. It should not have taken years, and an over six-billion dollar payout, for such a basic level of accountability.
“To be clear, Snyder’s overdue departure is a failure of the NFL to address sexual harassment and abuse within its own ranks and highlights the need for comprehensive policies with zero tolerance for sexual harassment, assault, and misconduct. These policies should apply to all NFL staff, players and owners alike.
“In reality, Snyder’s meager $60 million fine is less than 1% of the $6.05 billion he is being paid to surrender the team — that is nowhere near justice. Especially considering the notoriously misogynistic and abusive workplace environment Snyder’s twenty-four year tenure leaves behind. Survivors and women employees of the NFL deserve better.
“We call on the Washington Commanders’ new owner, Josh Harris, to implement new rules that protect team employees from sexual harassment, misconduct, and abuse. We sincerely hope that Harris will set a new standard for the Commanders and begin remedying the disturbing legacy of Dan Snyder.”
UltraViolet has been a consistent voice calling for the NFL to take sexual harassment and violence more seriously.

UltraViolet Demands FIFA Pay Women World Cup Players Directly After FIFA Backtracks on Promise of $30,000 Minimum Payments
Leading national gender equality group calls on FIFA to keep its original pledge and directly pay Women World Cup players $30,000 each
Yesterday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said FIFA could not ensure that all 732 players competing in this year’s Women’s World Cup would receive a promised minimum salary of at least $30,000, despite publicly guaranteeing so earlier this year.
In response, Arisha Hatch, Interim Co-Executive Director at UltraViolet, a leading national gender equality organization that has campaigned for equal pay from FIFA and the US Soccer Federation since 2015, issued the following statement:
“FIFA’s broken promise of guaranteed compensation, revealed just before national teams were set to compete, is an insult to all of the players in the Women’s World Cup, and millions of soccer fans around the world. The announcement is a glaring red card that reflects FIFA’s lack of commitment to gender equality.
“After very publicly declaring the amount of compensation that each player in this year’s Women’s World Cup would receive, FIFA has an obligation to ensure they follow through by paying at least $30,000 to every player. President Infantino’s attempts to brazenly pass that responsibility off to individual federations is unacceptable.
“We urge that FIFA maintain its original promise to the players of the Women’s World Cup and declare a plan to distribute direct payments before the second round of the tournament.”
In 2015, UltraViolet launched a campaign calling on FIFA to close the gender pay gap after the Women’s World Cup, with a petition signed by 72,000 UltraViolet members demanding equal pay for the US Women’s National soccer team. In 2016, UltraViolet ran a TV ad calling for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team players to receive equal pay for equal play during the women’s soccer finals at the Rio Olympics.
In 2019, UltraViolet launched a campaign targeting US Soccer demanding an equal pay policy for men and women players, which bolstered efforts toward a successful agreement signed by US men’s and women’s teams last year.

BREAKING: UltraViolet Hails FDA Approval of First Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill, Calls for Nationwide Availability at Retail Pharmacies
()FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, July 13, 2023

BREAKING: UltraViolet Hails FDA Approval of First Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill, Calls for Nationwide Availability at Retail Pharmacies
WASHINGTON, DC — Earlier today, the FDA announced its approval of Opill, the nation’s first-ever over-the-counter contraceptive pill. The FDA’s decision to approve Opill comes as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals considers whether the agency has the authority to approve mifepristone, a popular abortion medication used in more than half of abortions and in nearly all medication induced abortions nationwide.
In response to the FDA’s announcement, Sonja Spoo, Political Director and Director, Government Affairs and Advocacy at UltraViolet, a leading national gender equality organization, issued the following statement:
“We are relieved by the FDA’s long-awaited approval of a new over-the-counter birth control medication, eliminating the need for a prescription. This decision will enhance access to contraception for individuals and communities previously limited in their options – and in States where the right to access reproductive care is increasingly at risk.
“Now the responsibility falls on pharmaceutical providers, like Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, Walmart, Costco, and Target, to declare their commitment to providing this FDA-approved medication to all customers nationwide, regardless of state boundaries – and lay our their plans to do so as soon as it becomes available in 2024.
“We must all work to make sure FDA-approved medications, particularly those that are available over the counter, are available to all people who may need them. But this is especially critical given the precariousness of reproductive healthcare in the US and ongoing deliberation by the Fifth Circuit on the FDA’s authority to approve drugs like mifepristone.
“The FDA’s approval of Opill for over-the-counter use is certainly a victory for reproductive health care access – but it must be met with the unwavering commitment of providers to offer this essential medication regardless of location.”
Earlier this year, UltraViolet urged retail pharmacies, including Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, Walmart, Costco, and Target, to continue providing mifepristone to customers, and release public statements on the safety and effectiveness of the drug, in spite of questionable rulings from GOP-appointed federal judges.
UltraViolet also called on:
-
The FDA and the Biden Administration to ignore a federal district court ruling out of Amarillo, Texas banning mifepristone, arguing that a single federal district court judge should not have the power to halt a government agency’s authority, especially not over a safe, legal medication available for more than twenty years;
-
Governors to cut ties to pharmaceutical providers who refuse to dispense mifepristone, and for State Attorneys General to give assurances to providers that they will be protected from litigation if they continue to provide mifepristone;
-
All health insurance providers must cover abortion care, even in the face of this potential ban, and speak out against the ruling.

UltraViolet Applauds DOJ’s Decision Not to Continue Defending Donald Trump From E. Jean Carroll Defamation Lawsuit
WASHINGTON, DC — According to reports, the United States Department of Justice will not shield Donald Trump, who is being sued for defamation by writer E. Jean Carroll, reversing a controversial decision to defend the former President in 2021.
In reaction to the decision, Nicole Regalado, Vice President of Campaigns at UltraViolet, a leading national gender-justice organization, issued the following statement:
“The Justice Department made the right choice by reversing its earlier decision to shield Donald Trump from E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit. Defending a convicted sexual abuser was a waste of the Justice Department’s precious time, money, and resources.
“After becoming President in 2016, Donald Trump used the Department of Justice as his own law firm – hiding behind federal protections and shielding himself from accountability under criminal law. Trump deserves to face the consequences of his actions in Court without hiding behind federal government attorneys.
“Slandering survivors of sexual abuse should never be considered a legitimate function of federal office holders. That’s why the Justice Department’s decision to reverse course and stop defending Trump is a victory E. Jean Carroll and all survivors who seek legal redress against their abusers.”
In 2021, members of UltraViolet criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice for shielding Trump from Carroll’s defamation lawsuit. The group also sent a joint letter to President Biden denouncing and launched a petition urging the Department of Justice not to defend Trump, which garnered over 30,000 signatures.

UltraViolet has expressed its unwavering support for E. Jean Carroll since she filed suit against Trump since 2019.

UltraViolet Submits Comments to Facebook’s Oversight Board on Abortion Cases
Group Argues Abortion Cases Must Be Examined Through Gender Lens, Says Equating Abortion With Murder Should Be Banned on Platforms
Earlier today, UltraViolet, a leading national gender justice movement representing millions of people across the United States, submitted a public comment to Facebook’s Oversight Board, urging the body to ban abortion disinformation from Meta platforms including Facebook and Instagram as it reviews cases about abortion content. Specifically, UltraViolet called on the Oversight Board to evaluate these cases with specific docs on gender.
The Facebook Oversight Board is reviewing three cases related to abortion and was seeking comments from subject matter experts. The three cases in question involve content removal decisions made by Meta, which reviewers later determined were in error. The cases revolve around posts discussing abortion and the use of words like kill or murder.
UltraViolet argues that by examining these cases through a gender lens, several key points are revealed, including:
- Marginalized genders have historically faced discrimination, requiring the protection of their human rights. Meta must rectify past failures in addressing power dynamics and privilege.
- The majority of Americans support the right to abortion.
- Abortion is not uncommon: Nearly one in four women in America will have an abortion by age 45.
- The Board should prioritize the needs of marginalized communities.
- Case 1 highlights the need for posts that equate abortion with murder to be labeled hate speech. Labeling abortion as “murder” overlooks the systemic barriers and inequalities that affect marginalized communities’ access to comprehensive reproductive health care.
- Cases 2 and 3 showcase state-endorsed gender-based violence and emphasize the need for inclusive discussions that differentiate between hate speech and violence and advocating against hate speech and violence.
- Medical disinformation about abortion, especially medication abortion, poses a direct threat to life and demands urgent attention.
- Ableist hate speech perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines efforts to combat mental health stigmas.
- By addressing these issues. Meta can foster a welcoming platform that encourages debate without promoting gendered hate and violence

BREAKING: UltraViolet Responds to CNN CEO Chris Licht’s Departure From Network
NEW YORK, NY — Moments ago, it was reported that Chris Licht will leave CNN after just 13 months as CEO. Under Mr. Licht’s management, CNN ratings plummeted and the network faced scrutiny for hosting a town hall featuring former President Donald Trump, which allowed Trump to uncritically spew lies and disinformation.
In response to the news, Nicole Regalado, Vice President of Campaigns at UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization that called for CNN to fire Licht in May, issued the following statement:
“Under Chris Licht’s leadership – CNN embraced right-wing conspiracy theorists, platformed misogynists, and gave Donald Trump an unfettered national platform to spew disinformation, hate and attack a survivor of sexual abuse. Licht’s desperate attempt to seize ratings sacrificed his credibility with the real journalists at the network, and with CNN’s viewers – it was right for the network to recognize that and part ways with Licht. It will take time to earn it back.”
“In May, we called on CNN to fire CEO Chris Licht. While the network’s decision factored in several components that led to this, we know that their ratings resulting from a town hall event with Trump were simply not enough. We hope Licht’s departure sends a message to others in the media: embracing right-wing lies and platforming Donald Trump are not a pathway to success.”
“Good riddance.”
Nearly 20,000 UltraViolet members called for Licht to be fired last month. For years, UltraViolet has criticized CNN’s platforming of conspiracy theories and promotion of misogynistic figures.
In February, UltraViolet urged CNN to suspend Don Lemon after Lemon’s sexist on-air comments about women in their “prime.” The network eventually fired Lemon. In 2021, UltraViolet called for the immediate suspension of Chris Cuomo at CNN for advising his brother on how to defeat sexual abuse charges.
UltraViolet also publicly urged CNN to cancel their town hall with Donald Trump. The group commissioned two mobile billboards in Manchester, NH, and Atlanta, GA, to amplify their calls for CNN to cancel the event.
