TONIGHT 7:30 PM ET: Women’s Group to Project ‘Roe v. Wade Is More Popular Than Brett Kavanaugh’ On Portland Public Library Building

UltraViolet Members Warn Senator Susan Collins That Kavanaugh Would Provide the Fifth Vote Needed to Overturn Roe v. Wade and Criminalize Abortion

PORTLAND, ME — On Friday, September 7th, as Day 4 of the Brett Kavanaugh Senate confirmation  hearings concludes,  UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group, will stage a light projection on the Portland Public Library building with the message: ‘Roe v. Wade Is More Popular Than Brett Kavanaugh.’  The projection text references polls that show that 71 percent of voters in the United States believe that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned, while Kavanaugh’s approval rating is only 37%—making him the least popular Supreme Court nominee in decades.

WHEN: Friday, September 7th, 2018, 7:30 pm – 10 PM ET
WHERE: Portland Public Library | 5 Monument Way, Portland, ME 04101 (across from Monument Sq)
PROJECTION TEXT: “‘Roe v. Wade Is More Popular Than Brett Kavanaugh”

Yesterday, The New York Times reported on leaked emails from Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s time as a White House lawyer in the Bush Administration that challenged a woman’s constitutionally protected right to an abortion, as secured under Roe v. Wade.

According to the Times, Kavanaugh proposed deleting a line in a ghostwritten opinion piece that read “it is widely accepted by legal scholars across the board that Roe v. Wade and its progeny are settled law of the land,” with Kavanaugh writing “I am not sure that all legal scholars refer to Roe as the settled law of the land at the Supreme Court level since the Court can always overrule its precedent, and three current Justices on the Court would do so.”

“It is now crystal clear that a vote for Brett Kavanaugh is a vote to gut Roe v. Wade and criminalize abortion, bringing us back to a dark chapter in this country’s history where women were forced into deadly, unsafe and illegal abortions. Despite his efforts yesterday to mislead the Senate and the American people, the truth is out now,” explained Karin Roland, Chief Campaigns Officer of UltraViolet. “Senator Collins, who said she would not vote for a nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade, must keep her promise in mind as she votes on Kavanaugh’s nomination.”
