UltraViolet Action on Matt Gaetz Withdrawal from Consideration as Attorney General, Calls for Senate to vote NO on abusers in the Cabinet
Statement from Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director at UltraViolet Action, the largest online feminist organization in the U.S. on Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from consideration as Attorney General:
“Matt Gaetz should have never even been considered to run the Department of Justice. We are pleased that he has withdrawn from consideration to serve as Attorney General after credible reports from the House Ethics Committee linked Gaetz to sexual abuse of a minor and involvement in a sex-trafficking ring.
“But Gaetz isn’t the only abuser who should have no place in our government. Trump has nominated an abhorrent cabinet of abusers thus far; including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services; and Pete Hegseth, who was nominated to lead the Department of Defense. Both Hegseth and Kennedy have long records of allegations of sexual abuse–and in RFK, Jr.’s case, owned up to groping his children’s babysitter. Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Education, Linda McMahon, is also being sued for enabling child sex abuse.
“It is sad, but also not surprising, that being a sexual abuser, including a sexual predator of children, or condoning it in any way appears to be a prerequisite to joining President-elect Trump’s cabinet or inner circle. Trump is so focused on empowering fellow predators that he is even going as far as appointing Elon Musk, who is being sued by 8 former employees for sexual harassment at SpaceX, to lead a made-up government agency.”
“Any Senator with any shred of decency who supports the rule of law – regardless of party – should not allow the American people to be served by individuals who have broken laws and abused those with less power than them. Frankly, they cannot be trusted to serve the public interest. We can and must do better.”
