UltraViolet Applauds Justice Stephen Breyer’s Career, Urges President Biden to Appoint a Black Woman to SCOTUS

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement after twenty-seven years serving on the most powerful court in the nation.

In response, Bridget Todd, director of communications for UltraViolet, a national gender justice advocacy organization, issued the following statement:

“We applaud Justice Breyer after serving nearly three decades on the Supreme Court, where he frequently fought for and protected reproductive rights at the federal level.

“Throughout his career, Justice Breyer contributed his votes and legal opinions to several landmark cases that upheld and implemented policies favoring gender equality. He used his position of power to chip away at sources of oppression perpetuated by generations of systemic racism and sexism in the United States. Even in dissent, Justice Breyer thoughtfully articulated his progressive legal interpretations, taking America’s troubling histories into account. We are thankful for this work.

“As we celebrate Justice Breyer’s career, however, we also call for President Biden to live up to his campaign promise and nominate a Black woman to the bench who believes in the constitutionality of reproductive rights and a strong record favoring civil rights. On the 2020 campaign trail, President Biden promised to take the historic step of nominating a Black woman. We expect President Biden to deliver on this promise and will demand that the Senate move expeditiously to approve that nominee.”
