UltraViolet on SCOTUS Decision to Hear 15-Week Abortion Ban Case: “One Ruling Threatens Reproductive Rights for All.”

WASHINGTON, DC — Moments ago, the Supreme Court agreed to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on the constitutionality of Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. A ruling to uphold Mississippi’s abortion ban would threaten precedent set by the landmark case Roe v. Wade.

In response, Sonja Spoo, campaign director at UltraViolet, a leading national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization should alarm every American. This is a major ripple effect of the Trump administration that now threatens our right to decide if, or when, or how to have a family.

“For decades, racist right-wing extremists have relentlessly attacked abortion and basic bodily autonomy with violence and misinformation, tricking and manipulating people out of seeking basic, lifesaving forms of healthcare and abortion care. Their attempts to chip away at this fundamental right with the legal system have become a critical component of their party and platform.

“Mississippi’s law violates Court precedent. In taking this case, the Supreme Court shows their willingness to entertain extremism over commitment to protecting our rights. A 15-week abortion ban in Mississippi would have a disproportionate impact on low-income and women of color. A ruling upholding this ban would only exacerabate rife racial and economic inequality while opening the floodgates for more strict abortion bans throughout the nation that threaten Roe v. Wade”

“The Supreme Court must follow precedent and strike down this law.”
