UltraViolet Slams Oklahoma’s New Law Banning Abortion After ‘Fertilization,’ Reveals AT&T as Primary Corporate Sponsor o

UltraViolet Warns Oklahoma Law Will be the First of Many Extreme Bills to Restrict Abortion Rights After Leaked Supreme Court Opinion Overturning Roe v. Wade Harming Black Women and People of Color Disproportionately

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Yesterday, the Oklahoma legislature passed HB 4327, an abortion ban that will ban the majority of abortions at “fertilization,” making the law the most restrictive in the country if implemented. Oklahoma’s Governor Kevin Stitt signed a similar six-week abortion ban into law earlier this month.

In response, Sonja Spoo, director or reproductive rights campaigns at UltraViolet, a national gender equity advocacy organization, issued the following statement:

“Day by day, basic access to reproductive healthcare is more threatened. Oklahoma’s newest law banning abortion after ‘fertilization’ shows that extremists across the country are not even waiting for the Supreme Court to officially overturn Roe to implement their cruel, dangerous, and unpopular anti-woman agenda.

“Criminalizing those who seek access to reproductive healthcare and anyone who provides it will not stop abortion. Deputizing private citizens to enforce this ban, similar to Texas, adds another layer of absurdity and danger.

“Ripping bodily autonomy from people before most are even aware of being pregnant is not about ‘life,’ it’s about control. Republicans are succeeding with their strategy to keep abortion out of reach for millions with burdensome laws and barriers. Republicans know that Black, Latino and Indigenous women, young people, disabled people, as well as those with low and no incomes, will suffer the most — they just don’t care. The cruelty is the point.

“And AT&T is a major corporate sponsor funding and fueling the GOP’s attack on abortion rights and reproductive health care. – providing more than $43,000 in political contributions to the anti-abortion extremists in the Oklahoma. Shame on AT&T and all corporations complicit in this attack on their workers and consumers.

“Once again, we strongly urge Governor Stitt not to sign a bill that would ban the vast majority of abortion in Oklahoma.”

According to UltraViolet’s Repro Receipts campaign, AT&T donated more than $4,000,000 to anti-abortion lawmakers across the state and federal levelssince 2019
