UltraViolet Warns Trump Administration Policies Will Keep Rapists On Campus
Moments ago, the New York Times reported that Trump Administration Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is preparing new rules on campus sexual misconduct that would weaken protections for sexual assault survivors, reduce liability for school administrators and increase protections for accused sexual predators. According to the New York Times, the rules narrow the definition of sexual harassment, require survivors to go through more extensive processes to file complaints, and only hold school’s responsible for addressing sexual misconduct of it’s students when it occurs on their campuses.
Karin Roland, Chief Campaigns Officer for UltraViolet, a leading national women’s organization, issued the following statement:
“With one in four women sexually assaulted while in college, we are facing a national rape epidemic on our campuses, yet Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration care more about protecting perpetrators and sexual abusers over sexual assault survivors. This policy is extremely dangerous and beyond shameful.
“These new rules further protect abusers in a system that is already rigged in their favor. With sexual assaults routinely going unreported, uninvestigated and unpunished, these new rules will only make campuses less safe.”
