Women’s Group: Ellison Must Withdraw from Attorney General Race, Resign from Congress

UltraViolet Says Domestic Abusers Do Not Belong in Any Position of Power, Particularly Not in Congress or As Top Law Enforcement Agent

Yesterday, Austin Monahan, son of Karen Monahan who once dated Rep. Keith Ellison, accused Ellison of domestic violence, claiming he saw videos of Ellison physically abusing his mother saved on her computer. In a Twitter post, Karen Monahan confirmed that her son’s claims that Keith Ellison physically abused her are true. The allegations come just days ahead of the Minnesota primary election, where Ellison is facing off against four other Democrats for the open attorney general’s seat.

In reaction to the news, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s organization, issued the following statement:

“We believe women. We believe Karen Monahan.

“A domestic abuser does not belong in any position of power but particularly not as the top prosecutor in the State.”

“Keith Ellison should withdraw his candidacy for Minnesota’s Attorney General and resign from the House of Representatives.”
