Women’s Group Reacts to Bernie Sanders Presidential Campaign’s New Guidelines to Combat Sexual Misconduct and Discrimination on His 2020 Bid

UltraViolet Calls the Equity Blueprint a “Huge Step in the Right Direction”

WASHINGTON, DC — Yesterday, Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign unveiled a set of sweeping new guidelines to combat sexual misconduct and discrimination among his campaign team.

Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following statement responding to the guidelines, explaining:

“The Bernie Sanders campaign’s Equity Blueprint is a huge step in the right direction to build a campaign infrastructure that reflects and lives our progressive values. Building off of a wealth of resources – including UltraViolet, Works in Progess and PB Work Solution’s Guidelines for Campaigns: Preventing and Responding to Workplace Harassment and Sexual Violence – this plan suggests realistic and tangible ways to make campaigns safer and more equitable.  We commend the Sanders campaign for prioritizing this work and backing it up with the necessary time and resources.

“There is much more work to be done to ensure that campaign staffers are safe from things like harassment, retaliation, and abuses of power. This document is a solid reference point for all 2020 presidential hopefuls. It’s about time that progressive political campaigns practice their values and carry these principles for safer, better workplaces into the White House and their public policy proposals going forward.”

Earlier this year, UltraViolet, in conjunction with workplace abuse prevention experts from Works in Progress and PB Work Solutions, released a set of recommendations and guidelines for all 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to use to prevent and respond to workplace harassment and sexual violence within their campaigns.
