Women’s Group Says Facebook’s Decision to Reinstate Trump’s Account After 2 Year Suspension is Cowardly and Dangerous

UltraViolet Says Facebook Must Ban Trump Permanently; Anything Less is Not Enough

WASHINGTON, DC — Moments ago, Facebook announced that former President Donald Trump would be suspended for two years and reinstated if “conditions permit.”

In response to the announcement, Maria Tchijov, Vice President at UltraViolet, a leading gender-justice organization, issued the following statement:

“Facebook’s decision to not permanently ban Donald Trump is cowardly, dangerous, and frankly an insult to all of those who died in the insurrectionist attack on the US Capitol.

“Let’s be clear, the white nationalist insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th was a direct result of Facebook’s failure to uphold its own community standards – and the fact that Facebook would allow Donald Trump back on its platform with only a two year suspension proves that Mark Zuckerberg has not yet come to terms with his personal responsibility in Facebook’s role as the tool for spreading racism, violence and misinformation. The fact that Trump’s suspension would end just ahead of the 2024 election only further goes to show that Facebook either has not learned its lesson, or is doing everything in its power to appease the radical authoritarian right.

“Two years is not enough. Our message to Facebook leadership is simple: do better. Take responsibility, rather than hiding behind new “policies” that only further enable racism, misogyny and hate. Anything short of a permanent ban is not enough.

“For too long, Facebook has put profit and user engagement before human life, and today does little to change that.”
