Women’s Group: Virginia Needs New Leadership; Gov. Northam and Lt. Gov. Fairfax, and AG Mark Herring Must Resign

In reaction to the latest developments in Virginia, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group, issued the following statement, calling for the resignations of both Gov. Ralph Northam, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax, and Attorney General Mark Herring

“Virginians deserve leaders they can trust and respect.

“Black face, in any context, is always racist and never acceptable. It should have no place in society, let alone public office. Governor Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring’s apologies and excuses mean nothing – they must resign.

“Sexual violence is also never acceptable. We believe survivors, we believe Vanessa Tyson. The accusations against Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax are deeply disturbing and completely disqualifying – he must resign.

“Sexual violence and acts of racism must always be held to account – regardless of whether or not the perpetrators are Democrats or Republicans, celebrities or CEOs – no one who engages in either of these acts deserves to be in a position of power or prestige.

“Governor Northam,Lt. Governor Fairfax, and Attorney General Mark Herring must resign immediately.”
