Coalition of Gender-Justice Organizations Aim to Create New Paradigm for Preventing and Investigating Sexual Abuse Allegations

Letter by Ultraviolet, Time’s Up, Women’s March, National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, National Women’s Law Center, PB Work Solutions, Survivors Know, Justice for Migrant Women, Girls for Gender Equity, United State of Women, Vote Run Lead & Tewa Women United

NEW YORK  — In a letter released today, a coalition of women’s and survivor justice organizations provide New York Attorney General Letitia James with guidelines on an impartial investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and miscondudct against Governor Andrew Cuomo. The aim is to create a new paradigm, one in which we are proactively working to prevent harassment in the workplace and where survivors don’t have to risk everything to hold their abuser accountable without any guarantee of justice.

The letter, which was organized by UltraViolet, and signed by the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, ‘me too’ Movement, Justice for Migrant Women, the National Women’s Law Center, PB Work Solutions, Survivors Know, Tewa Women United, Time’s Up, Girls for Gender Equity, United State of Women, Vote Run Lead, and Women’s March, urges Attorney General James to adhere to guidelines, including:

  • Allegations of harassment or assault should be investigated through a nonpartisan, fair, and independent process
  • An investigation should be conducted with an independent, and transparent process ensuring that the reporting party, witnesses, and the responding party are treated with dignity and respect. Reporting parties and witnesses must also be free to decline to participate in an investigation or process, without fear of repercussions or retribution.
  • A fair process is one that recognizes only relevant denials and defenses in its pursuit of truth.
  • A fair process will not entertain attacks (by accused parties themselves or through proxies) against the reporting party or other efforts to cause further harm to survivors.
