UltraViolet: Women Everywhere are Ready to Fight for the Right to Safe & Legal Abortions for AL Women
ALABAMA — Last night, the Alabama Senate passed a bill to outlaw nearly all abortions in the state. The legislation bans abortions at every stage of pregnancy and could criminalize doctors who perform the procedure with felonies and up to 99 years in prison.
On a 21 to 11 vote, the Alabama Senate rejected amendments that would include exceptions for victims of rape or incest in the abortion ban legislation.
In reaction to the legislation, Shaunna Thomas, Executive Director of UltraViolet, issued the following statement in response:
“Alabama’s decision to pass this near-total ban on abortion is nothing short of an assault on women’s fundamental rights and a direct threat to women’s lives.
“Alabama women cannot afford for their access to reproductive health care, including abortions, to be up for grabs by a republican-dominated Senate comprised of only four women.
“This bill would put far too many women’s lives in grave danger. Governor Ivey must reject it. Women everywhere are watching and ready to fight for the right to safe and legal abortions for Alabama women if this horrific legislation is signed into law.”
