The FCC’s politically motivated actions signify the latest in a long line of attacks on women in media directed by Trump and his administration.

UltraViolet Action, a leading national women-led gender-justice organization, released the following statement in solidarity with The View, an all-woman talk show, after it publicly denounced politically motivated efforts by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr to censor its ability to discuss politics and elections:

“We stand in solidarity with The View’s production team for courageously showing up in defiance of the Trump administration’s attacks on free speech,” said UltraViolet Action Executive Director Arisha Hatch. “Their determination represents millions of women who refuse to be silenced by political attacks on our free speech and who are making a straightforward demand: open access to information about the issues that shape our lives and the freedom to discuss them in a public forum.”

Under Carr, the FCC has led an unprecedented crackdown on critics of the Trump administration, threatening to revoke broadcast licenses for several television stations and investigating others for allegedly failing to provide “equal time” for political candidates. (Notably, Carr has refrained from enforcing the “equal time” rule for broadcast radio stations that have stridently defended Trump and his allies.) Even in the cases of talk shows like The View, which have long been exempt from the “equal time” rule, the commission remains dogged in its attempts to silence opposition and has initiated the process to have their exempt status reviewed and potentially removed.

If Carr’s effort succeeds, The View could lose its editorial independence, including its ability to decide which political candidates to feature and potentially even which topics to cover.

As part of its solidarity with The View, the organization has released an online action [weareultraviolet/savetheview]—that has mobilized more than 9,000 people—to send emails to members of Congress demanding that Carr’s FCC cease its politically motivated attacks on the talk show.

“The same administration fighting to tear away women’s reproductive rights, voting rights and economic opportunity has now taken aim at our freedom of speech,” continued Hatch. “Except this time, instead of berating and insulting women journalists by name, Trump and his FCC are escalating their attacks by coming for the most-watched daytime talk show in the country, where women journalists set the agenda every day. There can be no doubt—this is about controlling women and erasing us from the public sphere.”

Indeed, the attack on The View—one of the most-watched daytime talk shows in America, hosted by an all-women panel and watched by millions of women—is just the latest in a long line of efforts by the Trump administration to silence women voices, including journalists, politicians, and other public figures. Trump himself has referred to the hosts of The View  as “dirty,” “demented,” and “dumb.”

“We cannot allow Trump’s FCC to stop women in the media from talking about politics and undermine our nation’s free press. It’s time for us to stand up—and it’s way past time for Congress to stop Trump from weaponizing the FCC to silence dissent,” concluded Hatch.
