Plane Flies Over Men’s U.S. Open Urging USGA, LPGA to Dump Trump
UltraViolet Commissions Plane to Fly Over Tournament With A Banner Reading: “USGA/LPGA: TAKE A MULLIGAN. DUMP TRUMP”
Erin, WI — On Saturday, July 17th, at the U.S. Open in Wisconsin, UltraViolet, a leading women’s advocacy organization, will fly a plane banner over the tournament urging the USGA and LPGA to sever ties with Donald Trump and move the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open from Trump’s Bedminster Golf Course. The banner, which will be in the air from 4:30 – 6:30 PM CT, will read:
“USGA/LPGA: TAKE A MULLIGAN. DUMP TRUMP”
WHEN: Saturday, June 17, 4:30 – 6:30 PM CT
WHERE: U.S. Open, Erin Hills, 7169 County Road O, Erin, WI 53027
Despite public outcry against the USGA and LPGA for planning to hold its 2017 U.S. Women’s Open Tournament at Donald Trump’s golf resort in Bedminster, NJ, the women’s major championship at Trump National Golf Club is still on as scheduled. The tournament will take place July 13-16.
“The USGA and LPGA must understand the kind of message they are sending to women across the country with their plan to hold the world’s most prestigious women’s golf tournament at the golf course of a racist, sexist, sexual abuser,” said Shaunna Thomas, Co-founder of UltraViolet. “Not only is the USGA normalizing Donald Trump’s bigotry, but they are giving millions in revenue, free advertising and branding to his platform and policies, which repeatedly degrade women and encourage hate and division.
“Despite the USGA’s claim that the association is apolitical, choosing to favor Trump’s interests is political—and there is no room for Trump’s misogynistic, racist brand in golf. Period. That’s why over 100,000 UltraViolet members are calling on the USGA and LPGA to show young golfers, including women and people of color, that it stands for an inclusive and strong future and move the U.S. Women’s Open out of Trump National Golf Course.”
More than 100,000 people have signed onto a petition from UltraViolet, calling for the USGA and LPGA to move the US Women’s Open out of the Trump National Golf Course.

In March, UltraViolet held a protest and flew a plane banner over the Bank of the Hope Founders Cup, with a message reading, “LPGA: TAKE A MULLIGAN. DUMP SEXIST TRUMP.” As part of the action, UltraViolet members handed out golf balls and golf ball-patterned beach balls that read: “LPGA: Dump Trump.” In addition, over a dozen advocacy organizations including UltraViolet, Color of Change, Courage Campaign, CREDO, Democracy for America, NARAL Pro-Choice America & Make It Work penned a letter urging the LPGA to move the U.S. Women’s Open out of Trump National Golf Course. The letter was sent to USGA and LPGA corporate sponsors.
