BREAKING: Women’s Group Applauds CBS Firing Moonves for Cause, Awarding No Severance; Says Company Still Must Do More To Change Abusive Culture
In reaction to the announcement, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national women’s group that had called for Moonves to be fired for cause and not rewarded a severance, issued the following statement applauding CBS’ decision:
“CBS’ announcement that it is firing former CEO Les Moonves for cause, and refusal to award him any severance is a huge victory for survivors of sexaul assault everywhere. This decision shows that across corporate America, the tides are turning, and the new norm is that if you abuse women, you will lose your job and your golden parachute. While CBS still has a long way to go to fully rid itself of the toxic culture of abuse that Moonves perpetuated, this is a strong step in the right direction.”
In July, UltraViolet called on CBS’ Board of Directors to fire Les Moonves for cause. In the past months, UltraViolet has:
- Commissioned a mobile billboard to circle CBS’ press tour in Los Angeles reading “We Believe the Women Sexually Harassed and Assaulted by Leslie Moonves – Why Doesn’t CBS?”
- Penned a letter to the CBS Board of Directors asking them to void Moonves’ settlement package and fire him for cause.
- Called for the firing of 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager
- Protested outside the CBS shareholder meeting in NYC calling on the Board of Directors to fire Moonves for cause and deny him a potential $120m golden parachute.
