Group Says Barrett’s Cruel Decision to Take Justice Away from Pregnant Teenage Rape Survivor Makes Her Unfit to Serve on the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, DC — This weekend, it was revealed that during her term on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Amy Coney Barrett overturned a decision compensating a 19-year-old pregnant woman, who was raped by a prison guard in a Milwaukee County correctional facility run by ex-Sheriff David Clarke. Barrett also wrote an influential decision last year which made it easier for college students accused of sexual assault to sue their universities over the handling of investigations.

In reaction to the news, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national survivors advocacy organization that played a key role in opposing the nomination of Brett Kavanuagh, issued the following statement:

“Judges like Amy Coney Barrett who use their power to protect institutions from accountability over sexual assaultdefend rapists and the institutions that enable them are incredibly dangerous and should be removed from their positions of authority – not elevated to a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court.

“There is no path to a world without sexual violence that includes Amy Coney Barrett and people like her on Supreme Court or any other court.”

“Barrett can not be confirmed. Survivors of sexual abuse deserve bettter.”
