LOOK UP: Planes Fly Over Las Vegas (NV), Charleston (WV), and Portland (ME) Urging Senators to Reject the Republican Health Care Plan

This Monday, June 26th, UltraViolet Action, a leading women’s advocacy organization, has commissioned planes to fly over downtown areas in Las Vegas, NV, Portland, ME, and Charleston, WV, with banners urging Sens. Heller, Collins, and Capito to reject and vote against the Republican health care plan. The planes will call attention to how the GOP House and Senate bills stand to hurt women.

On Thursday, June 22nd, the long-awaited text of the Senate health care repeal bill—legislation devised in secret by 13 male GOP members—was revealed. It will give massive tax breaks to the rich, strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood clinics and make even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill. The bill could be voted on as early as next week – ahead of the July 4th recess – without any committee hearings or public input.

Nita Chaudhary, Co-founder of UltraViolet Action, explained:

“We now know why Senate Republicans kept their health care repeal bill secretive for so long: The bill is crueler than we could have ever imagined, and will make healthcare worse for everyone— especially women and women of color.  It eliminates guaranteed coverage for live-saving cervical and breast cancer screenings, abolishes comprehensive maternity care and domestic violence screenings, defunds Planned Parenthood, and makes it harder for women to access birth control and emergency contraception.

“In no uncertain terms, a vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act is a declaration of war on women—and Senators Susan Collins, Dean Heller, and Shelley Moore Capito could be the deciding votes on legislation that would quite literally cost hundreds of thousands of women their lives.”

“Repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with a secretive Republican plan isn’t a solution, it’s an assault on women and the beginnings of a serious national healthcare crisis—one which will cut off millions of Americans from health insurance coverage. Women across the country oppose the Republicans’ extremist healthcare agenda—and we will not rest until it is defeated. We simply will not allow GOP Senators to betray us and our families.”
