THURSDAY 12PM: Pro-Choice Advocates Deliver Copies of the Constitution, 100,000 Signatures to Governor Kasich Shaming Him for Signing Unconstitutional 20-Week Abortion Ban

On Tuesday, Governor Kasich Signed a 20-Week Abortion Ban While Vetoing a Six-Week Abortion Ban

Columbus, OH — On Thursday, December 15th, members of UltraViolet, Equality Ohio and NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio will deliver more than 100,000 signatures to Governor John Kasich’s office in Columbus, protesting the passage of Ohio’s new 20-week abortion ban, signed into law earlier this week. The coalition will also deliver copies of the Constitution to Governor Kasich shaming him for undermining a woman’s constitutionally-protected right to access abortion care.

WHERE: Capitol Square side of the Statehouse off of High Street. 44 S High St, Columbus, OH 43215. After the speakers conclude, the coalition will move to the Riffe Center across the street.

Many complications found in pregnancy, such as spina bifida, are only found after 20 weeks. Other complications found later during pregnancy can pose dangerous risks to the health of the woman.

“John Kasich has once again proved that he is no moderate — he is a radical right wing politician who wants to dictate to women what we can and can’t do with our bodies. Criminalizing abortions after 20-weeks does not make women or our families safer or healthier,” explained Karin Roland, Chief Campaigns Officer at UltraViolet. “By signing this inhumane ban into law, one that does not even include an exception for cases of rape or incest, Governor Kasich is supporting a radical anti-woman agenda designed to restrict a woman’s access to constitutionally-protected reproductive health services – and this is unacceptable. Women’s health care decisions should be made between them and their doctor, not politicians like Kasich enforcing their will and beliefs on us. Shame on Governor Kasich – Ohio women deserve better.”

“John Kasich is treating women’s health care like a game. He thinks that by vetoing one abortion ban Ohioans will not notice that he has signed another. The 20-week abortion ban callously disregards the unique circumstances that surround a woman’s pregnancy. Once a woman has made the decision to end a pregnancy, she needs access to safe and legal abortion care in her community,” added NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland. “Kasich’s actions today will fall hardest on low-income women, women of color, and young women. History will not judge Gov. Kasich’s disregard for women’s health kindly.”
