TODAY: Patients Join Women’s Group to Hold Vigils Outside Senators’ Offices Across the Country, Urging Them Reject the Health Care Repeal Bill

Today, June 27, patients covered by the Affordable Care Act will join UltraViolet, a women’s advocacy organization, in holding vigils outside the local offices of Senators Lisa Murkowski (AK), Shelley Capito (WV), Rob Portman (OH), Susan Collins (ME), Bill Cassidy (LA), Tom Cotton (AR), Dean Heller (NV), Cory Gardner (CO), and Jeff Flake (AZ), urging their state’s respective Senator to reject and vote against the Republican health care plan. The vigils will feature flowers, candles, photos and stories of people who will suffer if the ACA is repealed.

The events will detail the sheer volume of people who have benefitted from Medicaid expansion in each state, rely on Planned Parenthood for life-saving cancer screenings and access to birth control and emergency contraception, and who live with pre-existing conditions.

On Thursday, June 22nd, the long-awaited text of the Senate health care repeal bill—legislation devised in secret by 13 male GOP members—was revealed. It will give massive tax breaks to the rich, strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood clinics and make even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill. The bill could be voted on as early as this week—ahead of the July 4th recess—without any committee hearings or public input.
