TONIGHT 5:30 PM: Progressive Groups To Protest Senator Collins At Her Event Tonight, Calling On Her to Vote “No” on Republican Health Care Legislation
Mainers for Accountable Leadership & UltraViolet Stage Silent Protest As Sen. Collins Attends a Private Event in Augusta
Augusta, ME — Tonight, as Senator Susan Collins attends a private event at the Senator Inn, members of UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy group, and Mainers for Accountable Leadership will stage a protest outside of the hotel, urging Senator Collins to reject and vote against the Republican health care plan.
On Thursday, June 22nd, the long-awaited text of the Senate health care repeal bill—legislation devised in secret by 13 male GOP members—was revealed. It will give massive tax breaks to the rich, strip Medicaid funds from Planned Parenthood clinics and make even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House bill.
WHAT: Mainers for Accountable Leadership & UltraViolet Stage Protest Urging Sen. Susan Collins to Reject GOP Health Care Bill
WHERE: Senator Inn & Spa, 284 Western Ave, Augusta, ME 04330
WHEN: Tonight, 5:35 – 7:00 PM Local Time
LOCAL CONTACT: April Humphrey, 207.200.6810
“The Senate Republicans’ health care bill will make cuts that stand to hurt millions—especially women and women of color,” explained Nita Chaudhary, Co-founder of UltraViolet. “It eliminates guaranteed coverage for live-saving cervical and breast cancer screenings, abolishes comprehensive maternity care and domestic violence screenings, defunds Planned Parenthood, and makes it harder for women to access birth control and emergency contraception.
Senator Susan Collins could be the deciding vote on legislation that would quite literally cost hundreds of thousands of women their lives. Just days ago she stated, ‘There should be no barrier to coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as people enroll and pay their premiums,’ but this bill permits insurers to once again offer a plan to a woman that doesn’t even cover treatment for her condition, or makes her pay exorbitant costs. She has also voted against severe Medicaid cuts in the past and expressed concerns about the impact of these deep cuts to Mainers.”
Mainers have been speaking out against the Senate’s cruel “WealthCare” bill that would strip insurance from millions of Americans while further enriching the nation’s richest. Today, with Susan Collins’ vote in the balance, they take that message directly to her.
“The senator has been hard to contact in person or at her offices,” explained April Humphrey of Mainers for Accountable Leadership.“With this peaceful protest, we hope to make our message clear and visible to her.”
Collins, R-Maine, will be speaking at a YMCA donor appreciation event at the Senator Inn & Spa in Augusta. Protesters will gather outside the building before the event with signs and information about the health care bill’s prospective effects on Maine families.
