TUESDAY: Truck Billboard Circles Downtown Phoenix Ahead of Trump Rally With the Message: “Arpaio & Trump: A Match Made by Racism”

UltraViolet’s Women Resist White Supremacy Campaign Urges “No Pardon for Racist Criminal Sheriff” Arpaio

PHOENIX, AZ — On Tuesday, August 22nd, a new mobile billboard will traverse downtown Phoenix, stopping near the Phoenix convention center, where President Donald Trump will hold a campaign-style rally. The billboard, paid for by UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, calls Trump out for supporting Joe Arpaio, a notorious racist and former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona.  In July, Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt for failing to abide by a court order to stop detaining undocumented immigrants. The billboard reads: “Arpaio & Trump: A Match Made by Racism,” “Women Resist White Supremacy” and “No Pardon for Criminal Sheriff” Joe Arpaio.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 22nd, 1:30pm to 9:30pm (local time)

WHERE: Phoenix Convention Center

Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet, explained:

“Donald Trump and Joe Arpaio are a match made in bigot heaven. Both men have a disturbing history of racially motivated comments, particularly against Latinos, and are widely known for their ignorant, xenophobic worldviews.  Trump has labeled Mexican immigrants as ‘rapists’, ‘thugs’, and ‘drug dealers’; he even blamed ‘both sides’ for the horrifically violent display sparked by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia last week.

“Arpaio built his entire career and reputation on terrorizing Latinos. He is notorious for imposing harsh conditions in jails and discriminating openly against immigrants. Last month, Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt after he defied a court order to stop profiling and detaining brown people and Latinos.

“Given these incredibly disturbing facts, it’s no wonder that Donald Trump would ‘seriously consider’ pardoning someone like Joe Arpaio, whose views are just as twisted as his own.”
