UltraViolet on 41 Senators Opposing Gorsuch’s Nomination and the Potential Nuclear Option
Earlier today, 41 Senators confirmed they would side with the grassroots resistance and oppose the nomination of Neil Gorsuch, making him unable to clear the 60 vote bar to confirm a Supreme Court nominee. In response to the news, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet, a leading women’s advocacy group, issued the following statement:
“Since the election, millions of people have come out to make their voices heard. Americans object to the Trump Administration’s extreme anti-woman agenda and expect Democrats to fulfil their constitutional duty to provide a check on his power. Today, forty-one Democratic Senators made good on their promise to resist the Trump Administration by opposing Gorsuch’s appointment – making Trump’s Supreme Court nominee unable to clear the 60-vote bar needed for confirmation.
“These Senators are are just in doing everything in their power to stop Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court. Gorsuch is more conservative than Scalia, will move the Supreme Court far to the right, and will put the rights of women, LGBTQ people, communities of color and workers on the chopping block. His appointment would solidify the worst of the Trump Administration into our nation’s laws for a lifetime – something that America simply cannot afford.
“When Democrats stand on principle to protect the Supreme Court, the grassroots movement stands with them. Instead of changing the rules to force a wildly unpopular nominee into a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court, Republicans should change the nominee. Going nuclear should never be an option.”
