Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet Action, issued the following statement in response:
“We were deeply saddened and troubled when reading Holly Fussell’s story about her difficulties in dealing with and reporting sexual harassment and assault. Survivors of harassment and assault should always be listened to and believed.
“These are major problems that face women and men throughout the workforce. It is unacceptable in any job, and unfortunately we know it is rampant in political campaigns.
“That’s why we were encouraged by Congressional candidate Susannah Randolph’s statement today where she pledged moving forward to not only be a champion in advocating for policies that boost and protect women, but also to be a leader of her own team, in supporting survivors and holding her staff accountable.
“There ought to be a zero tolerance policy when it comes to sexual harassment—especially for those of us who identify as progressives.
“We can stop sexual harassment. But only if we speak out loudly and make clear it is unacceptable. And only if all progressives candidates and progressive organizations are willing to stand-up and call out what is wrong, especially in difficult circumstances. Silence only makes the problem worse. We can and must do better.”
