UltraViolet Calls John Enochs’ Plea Deal “Another Tragic Example of Our National Rape Culture”
Former Indiana University Student Accepts Plea Deal: All Felony Charges Dropped, No Jail Time Despite Two Rape Cases
Last week, former Indiana University student and Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother, John P. Enochs, who was charged with rape in two separate cases last September, accepted a plea deal in which felony charges for both cases were dismissed and he was sentenced to a year’s probation with no prison time for a misdemeanor. Enochs had been scheduled to stand trial on July 5.
In reaction to the news, Nita Chaudhary, co-founder for UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following statement:
“John P Enochs’ plea deal is another tragic example of our national rape culture. Rape culture simply put, is when our society excuses or normalizes sexual violence. Here we have yet another case where our so-called justice system is protecting a privileged white rapist over the two separate women he raped. It doesn’t get plainer than this. Survivors of rape deserve better.”
