UltraViolet on CNN Firing Chris Cuomo
Group Says Good Riddance: Chris Cuomo’s Use of Position at CNN to Seek Information On, Influence Coverage of Brother’s Sexual Harassment Allegations Was a Clear Violation of Professional Ethics
Statement from Bridget Todd, communications director at UltraViolet, a leading national gender justice organization, on CNN’s announcement that it would be firing Chris Cuomo:
“Good riddance.
“Chris Cuomo used his position at CNN to orchestrate attacks on the brave survivors who came forward to share how they had suffered sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of his brother, former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“This is a severe breach of journalistic and professional ethics – and a clearly fireable offense. CNN made the right decision to sever ties with Chris Cuomo.
“Make no mistake – when people in position of power use that power to influence coverage of, and help cover up sexual abuse – they are perpetuating rape culture. It doesn’t matter if it is your brother, your friend, or your political allies – all survivors deserve to have their stories heard, investigated, and taken seriously.”
In May, UltraViolet called for CNN to conduct a thorough investigation into claims that Chris Cuomo helped advise his his brother, then New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on the sexual harassment and abuse allegations against him. When reports that Chris Cuomo used his position at CNN to seek information on his brother’s accusers, UltraViolet called for Chris Cuomo Cuomo to be fired.
