UltraViolet Slams DOJ Decision to Defend Trump from Defamation Lawsuit Stemming from Slanderous Attacks on E. Jean Carroll

WASHINGTON, DC — According to the New York Times, late yesterday, the United States Department of Justice argued that Donald Trump could not be sued for defamation after making supposedly “crude and disrespectful” comments as part of his official duties as president.

In reaction to the decision, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet, a leading national gender-justice organization, issued the following statement:

“Restoring our country in the wake of the Trump Administration is about more than restoring trust in government and investing in the American people – it’s also about repudiating the culture of misogyny that Donald Trump cultivated and rewarded throughout his four years in office.

“Donald Trump was using the Department of Justice as his own personal law firm and this case to send a chilling message to survivors of sexual assault. The fact that the Biden Department of Justice is continuing this is unacceptable, deeply disappointing and beyond shameful.

“Slandering survivors of sexual abuse should never be considered a legitimate function of federal office holders. To assert as much is an insult to the millions of women that voted to put an end to the Trump presidency.”
