OHIO – This afternoon, Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) signed a 20-week abortion ban into law, while vetoing a six-week abortion ban which would have have banned abortion at a time when most women don’t even know that they are pregnant.
Neither law allowed for an exception in the case of rape or incest. Less than 2% of abortions take place after 20 weeks – and the majority of abortions after that 20-week period are from wanted pregnancies that are just too dangerous or unhealthy to continue:
Nita Chaudhary, Co-founder of UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Kasich signing the 20-week abortion ban:
“John Kasich has once again proved that he is no moderate — he is a radical right wing politician who wants to dictate to women what we can and can’t do with our bodies. Criminalizing abortions after 20-weeks does not make women or our families safer or healthier.
“By signing this inhumane ban into law, one that does not even include an exception for cases of rape or incest, Governor Kasich is supporting a radical anti-woman agenda designed to restrict a woman’s access to constitutionally-protected reproductive health services – and this is unacceptable. Women’s health care decisions should be made between them and their doctor, not politicians like Kasich enforcing their will and beliefs on us. Shame on Governor Kasich – Ohio women deserve better.”
