Women’s Group to Senate GOP: “Women Are Watching”

UltraViolet Slams Republicans For Breaking the Rules for Trump’s Anti-Woman Supreme Court Pick

Senators Who Support Gorsuch Nomination Will Be Held Responsible for Every Supreme Court Ruling That Hurts Women

WASHINGTON DC — Moments ago, Republicans in the Senate invoked the “nuclear option,” breaking long-standing Senate rules to push through Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch without the required 60 vote threshold.

Ahead of the vote, UltraViolet, a leading women’s advocacy group, warned Senate Republicans in an online ad takeover of The Hill’s Senate, House and Administration coverage, not to break the rules for Trump’s anti-woman Supreme Court pick saying that “women are watching.

In reaction to the vote, Shaunna Thomas, co-founder of UltraViolet, issued the following statement:

“Senate Republicans have shown they will stop at nothing to implement their extreme, anti-woman agenda.  Today, Republicans have broken decades of Senate rules to put a man on the Supreme Court who will tip the balance of power, solidifying the worst of the Trump Administration’s agenda into law for a lifetime. Today’s vote puts women, LGBTQ people, communities of color and workers on the chopping block.

“Our message to Senate Republicans and turncoat Democrats like Sen. Manchin and Sen. Heitkamp is simple: women are watching and you will be held accountable.  Every time the Supreme Court makes a decision that hurts women, we will hold you responsible.  We will make sure that every one of your constituents knows that Supreme Court-sanctioned attacks on our nation’s principles were possible only because of you.

“We thank the powerful action of most Senate Democrats who stood with women and the grassroots against Trump’s nominee. When Democrats stand on principle, we stand with them.”

As part of its commitment to holding Senators accountable for Supreme Court decisions that hurt women as a result of Gorsuch’s confirmation, UltraViolet has pledged to hold in-district events and commission high-profile ads like planes and billboards tying Senators to decisions that hurt women.
